Class Notes 12/15

Today in class we covered sections 4-3 (greatest common factors) and 4-4 (decimals and fractions)

In the first section we learned that we can find the greatest common factor of 2 or more numbers by using a few different strategies. The first strategy that we can use is to list all factors of all numbers and then figure out the largest factor all the numbers have in common. The second strategy we can use it to use prime factorization using a factor tree and the last strategy involves prime factorization using the ladder method.

The second section focused on converting decimals into fractions and fractions into decimals.

Class Notes 11/3

Today was a great day in class. We covered a lot of material but I thought everyone did a great job of staying on task. We covered Sections 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, AND 2-8. These sections showed us how to solve equations that had addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

What we learned today is that all of these equations can be solved using the inverse operations.

For instance an addition equation can be solved using subtraction, a subtraction equation can be solved using addition, because addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

The same thing can be said for multiplication and division.

Homework Due Monday 11/7: 4 problems for each side of the two handouts (meaning 4 problems of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

**This homework is optional and will not be counted against you if you don't do it. I forgot it was a no homework weekend when I assigned it. The TEST will still be on Wednesday.**

  • We will have a chapter 2 test on Wednesday 11/9.

Today in class we got some more practice with evaluating algebraic expressions, and then moved onto section 2-2. This section deals with translating words into math, and math into words.

The lesson focused on the fact that even though we are now using variables, that the language stays the same. While we say "35 plus 41", when we remove 35 and replace it with a variable the language stays the same however 35 is replaced with x; "x plus 41".

Class Notes 10/14

Today in class we went over the section 1-2 homework plus the in class assignment that was completed last class. After we went over both of those assignments we moved on into Section 1-3, Order of Operations.

Today we learned about the proper order that numerical expressions must be simplified. We also learned that when we see an expression with multiplication and division on the same line that we need to perform the operations as we move left to right, and not just do multiplication first because that shows up first in PEMDAS.

We then had a few minutes at the end of class to work together in groups and simplify some numerical expressions.

Homework Due Tuesday 10/18: Page 20 #9-21 odds, 34, 35, 36.
