Class Notes 11/12

Today in class we briefly went over section 2.2 of the book. I didn't want to spend to much time going over this. The section dealt with translating math into words. The main idea of this section is that we use the same words when talking about algebraic expressions as we do with numerical expressions. After we went over that section we started looking at negative numbers. What do they look like on a number line, how do we treat negative number when we add them or subtract them.

For Homework due 11/16: The handout on adding/subtracting with negative numbers.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Class Notes11/9

Today in class we worked more on section 2.1. We took some notes and worked more on evaluating algebraic expressions using tables.

For homework Due 11/12: pg 53 #25,26,27 and the worksheet I gave in class.

The worksheet deal with negative numbers and I know we haven't really talked about them yet. So do your best. The main thing I am looking for in that you know how to plug a given number into an algebraic expression and where it goes.

Class Notes 10/30

Hi all, class on Friday was review for the test which is on Tuesday.

Homework: Study for the exam.

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Class Notes 10/28

Today in class we worked more with patterns. We spent a lot of time today looking at patterns and worked on strategies on how to find patterns of a string of numbers. We then spent a time going over the patterns I asked you to create and we then tried to solve each pattern and fill in the blanks.

There is no homework due for Friday, but we will have a test on Tuesday Nov. 3. The test will cover all of chapter 1 (estimation, exponents, order of operations, and patterns, there also may be a question or two regarding the mathematicians projects we worked on). So I suggest you start looking over the material so that you can come to me in class or free time with questions.

This will be the first test, which means it will be a little longer than the quiz you previously took, but I don't expect it to be overwhelming. I want to challenge you, but at the same time I will not make this impossible for you to do. I think you all will do great. We will use Friday as a study period so that we can review some material that we haven't gone over in a few weeks and you can ask me questions about the test.

See you all Friday!

Mr. Schroth

Class Notes 10/16

Today in class we went over some problems addressing how to choose the appropriate method to solve a problem (mental math, pencil and paper, or calculator). Even though you can use your calculator its still important to be able to know how to do problems the other two ways. You won't always have a calculator at your fingertips.

For Homework, Due 10/20. Read section 1.6 (pages 29 &30).

Have a great weekend.

Mr. Schroth

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

Class Notes 10/14

Today in class we covered section 1.5 which is trying to figure out which method of solving a problem is correct. We can always use a calculator but is it honestly always the best choice? What if you don't have a calculator on you. This section is meant to help you understand when to use your head, when to use pencil and paper and then when to use a calculator.

Homework due Friday 10/16: The handout that was given in class.

Class Notes 9/18

Today in class we started off like every class with some warm up problems that consisted of rounding, using exponents and working on our order of operations. After that we went over the homework that I had graded from page 8. We went spent the rest of class working on estimation and rounding.

Homework:
You can redo the assignment I handed back. There was some confusion on some of the questions so I gave the class the opportunity to try the problems again that you got wrong.

The assignment was pg 8, #7-21 odd problems only.
Also I asked the class to read section 1.3 so that when we meet next we can go over that section on the book.

I hope you all have a good weekend,
Mr. Schroth

Class Notes 9/16

In class today we went over sections 1.2 and started section 1.3. These sections covered exponents and the order of operations. As a group we went over some examples of how exponents are used and how they can be written.

An example in class was to multiply 5x5x5x5 then multiply 5^4 (read 5 to the 4th power). I wanted to show that these two expressions were in fact the same just written differently.

I also handed out the first part of the group project to all the groups.

Homework: Due Friday 9/18 Read section 1.3 Do page 20 #9-21 odd, 34, 35, 36.

Intro form for group project due Tuesday 9/22.

Saturday, September 12, 2015

Class Notes 9/11

Today (9/11) was our second meeting for 6th grade math. I collected the signed syllabus which was the assigned homework, then let the students do some warm up problems to start class. When the students finished doing the problems on their own each student took a turn writing up their solution to a problem on the board and explained how they came to the answer. It was a lot of fun to watch the kids work up at the board and then talk to the class. The confidence that each student showed was very encouraging for me. After that we briefly went over what is expected of them when it comes to handing in assignments and how I would like to them to set up and complete each assignment. Then we spent the rest of class going over the summer reading, and each student was given the chance to talk about one of the mathematicians that they read over the summer. When that was over each group selected three mathematicians that they would like research more and do a group project on. Luckily each group was able to get their first choice and will now be spending time over the next couple weeks researching, writing a paper, and making a poster that will be hung in the classroom.

The homework that will be due Wednesday 9/15 is:

Read sections 1.1 and 1.2
Then do problems 7-21 odd numbered problems only on pg 8 (end of sec. 1.1)

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and I will see you next week.

1st Day of Grade 6 Math

Today was a great first day of 6 grade math. The class is split into two sections and both sections were a blast to be a part of. Today was a get to know you kinda day in both classes as we did some sharing about some of our favorite things and went over the syllabus. We also talked about the summer reading which was Mathematicians are People Too. We split into groups and each group is going to create a poster focusing on one mathematician. These poster are going to help me decorate my brand new room.
Overall it was a fun first day and I am looking forward to working with all of the 6th graders this year.

For homework you are too go over the syllabus with a parent and have it signed and returned on Friday. Also be sure to bring you summer packets and book again to class. I will be collecting the summer packet as well.

See you all Friday,

Mr. Schroth
